European superpowers lead the way with the bookmakers

European sides dominate the frontrunner positions for the Club World Cup title, with most bookmakers listing nine of the top favourites as clubs from Europe. The familiar names of Real Madrid, PSG, Manchester City and Bayern Munich are all leading the way. Here we take a deeper look at each candidate.

Real Madrid (+400)

It’s no surprise to see Real Madrid enter the tournament as favourites with most bookmakers. They’re the most successful side in European action and have continually proved their worth on the continental stage. Although they were knocked out in the Champions League quarter-finals last season, they have won this competition a record five times.

Their pedigree on this stage explains why they’re so heavily favoured, and their pre-tournament additions have only strengthened their case. Madrid have added Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold to their ranks, both of whom bolster a back-line that previously looked like it could undermine their chances of success in this tournament.

They come into this tournament under new leadership, as Xabi Alonso takes charge for the first time. With new signings to integrate, and a new style of play to adjust to, there are more reliable picks this time around.

PSG (+450)

Entering this competition fresh from their maiden Champions League triumph, it’s no surprise to see PSG among the frontrunners. After making a slow start to their Champions League campaign, PSG bounced back to establish themselves as one of Europe’s most formidable opponents.

The Parisians secured an impressive quadruple last term, winning Ligue 1, the French Super Cup, Coupe de France and the Champions League. They’re one of the few sides in this tournament with huge momentum behind them. With one of the world’s best young squads, they’ll be formidable opponents.

Their odds have shortened since the Champions League triumph, which has reduced the value of betting on them. PSG are certainly leading candidates to win the Club World Cup, but if it’s value you’re after, you might want to look elsewhere - especially given injury concerns surrounding Ousmane Dembele and Bradley Barcola.

Manchester City (+550)

Placed in a fortunate group with two not so familiar sides, City are good value to reach the knockouts. With Juventus as their main challenge, advancing to the knockouts should be a mere formality after what was a disappointing domestic season.

City endured a trophyless season for the first time since Pep Guardiola’s first campaign in charge. They finished well off the pace in the Premier League title race and were beaten in the FA Cup final. In addition to this, they were dumped out of the Champions League in the last 32. This is the last chance to redeem an otherwise dismal season.

They’ve made some smart moves in the market before the Club World Cup, recruiting three players to bolster the squad. Rodri’s return could be the spark City need to push forward. It’s a little surprising to see them priced as favourably as they are, particularly with question marks surrounding their closest rivals.

Bayern Munich (+650)

According to Opta’s power rankings, Bayern Munich have been placed in the toughest group to qualify from. The group has the highest average team ranking of all at the Club World Cup, but they’re still expected to advance with ease.

Vincent Kompany’s men regained the Bundesliga title last season in his first season in charge. Yet, the season will largely be remembered for some poor European performances, with Bayern falling at the quarter-final stage. A limp result in the last 32 against Celtic showed they have potential to crumble on the biggest stage.

On a positive note, their potential path to the final looks favourable given the opponents they could face. That alone may be enough to attract bettors to their healthy price to win the tournament, or even just to back them to go deeper into the competition. They probably aren’t well equipped enough to win the trophy, however.

Manchester City provide great value for bettors

Madrid come into this tournament with a new manager and PSG face fitness doubts over their star player, so Manchester City will likely feel confident. Their recruitment in the mini transfer window prior to this tournament has been eye-catching, bringing in Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders.

Ait-Nouri fills the gap at left-back, while Reijnders is a direct replacement for De Bruyne. If there was an award for the best recruitment before the Club World Cup, City would have probably won it. Yet, the biggest advantage might come from someone they haven’t even spent money on.

That’s the return of Rodri, who was sorely missed last season when he was struck down by a knee injury. His presence is vital in City’s success, and that was evident when he was removed from the XI, so having him back is a huge boost for Guardiola’s men.

Manchester City are a completely different team when Rodri is in the lineup compared to when he’s absent. Before his injury, they were the early title contenders. Afterwards, they got stuck in a run where they won once in nine league games, so his inclusion does make a distinct difference to City’s success.

With defensive and midfield gaps now filled by new and returning players, City look like a force to be reckoned with. Their price is more generous than those of their rivals, and they have an elite level squad behind them. That shouldn’t be underestimated either, especially after most sides have seen players rush straight back after international duty. Having a strong squad should be key.

Those looking for some longer-odds value may be tempted by Inter Milan. They’re priced at double digits and have shown they can hold their own against Europe’s best.

Their rigid defensive nature makes them hard to beat, and that could be a huge weapon in this tournament. After the disappointment of their Champions League final defeat, they’ll be keen to bounce back quickly.
